A day of screen printing

Today I have spent my day screen printing some greetings cards at the Drawn in Bristol studio. I decided to print a couple of ideas that have been floating around in my sketch book for a while. Today was a bit of a trial but I hope to do lots more screen printing in future and I have lots more designs waiting to be released from my sketch books! Next time I will experiment with printing with more than one layer.

The Devilled Egg

I have been working non stop in the studio recently - Im starting to think I live there! So I thought I would share my progress on the project I am working on for The Devilled Egg Kitchen Academy.

Since my last post about this project the paintings have changed quite dramatically! After lots of sketching and experimentation I came up with the idea of using a blackboard effect as a background for the paintings. I then continued with the idea of using an overhead view of the ingredients placed on top with lists of seasonal ingredients.

Here are some pictures showing different stages of the paintings.

Paintings for The Devilled Egg Kitchen Academy

Spring

Autumn

Winter

As well as the calendar illustration, I am also working on a series of 6 large painting for display in The Devilled Egg Kitchen Academy. Here is a little sneak preview of some of the colour studies I have been working on. These are part of a series of 4 paintings depicting seasonal ingredients and will eventually be painted onto 40X40cm canvases.

The Devilled Egg Kitchen Academy

I am very excited to announce my recent collaboration with The Devilled Egg Kitchen Academy

Having been approached by Barbora Stiess, head chef and founder of The Devilled Egg, I was privileged to be asked to donate an illustration to be used on the front cover of The 2013 Devilled Egg Recipe Calendar.

The calendar is being produced as part of a number of charity events organized by The Devilled Egg, to raise money for the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI). The calendar features exclusive recipes from some of the South West's best chefs, including Rick Stein and Valentine Warner, and wine recommendations from Angela Mount. At £14.99 it is the perfect Christmas gift and every penny goes to the BUI.

I have also donated the original illustration which will be auctioned at one of the events to raise further funds for the charity.

As well as the charity calendar, The Devilled egg will be hosting The Golden Egg Student Cook Off, a cookery competition where students from Bristol Uni will go head to head. The four competition rounds will be held on the 8th, 16th, 23rd and the final on Tuesday 27th November. The student's culinary creations will be judged by a foodie judging panel, including Fiona Beckett, Xanthe Clay, Angela Mount, Genevieve Taylor, Lorna Knapman and Ashbell McElveen.

During this exciting competition The Devilled Egg Kitchen Academy will throw open its doors to the public in exchange for generous donations. There will also be an online vote for the public to get the chance to pick their winner from the top 10 entrants in The Golden Egg Student Cook off.

The Devilled Egg will also be running a Cheese & Wine Tasting event hosted by award winning food and drink journalist and author Fiona Beckett, on Friday 23rd November.

The BUI is very important to Barbora Stiess, head chef and founder of The Devilled Egg. Her father and father-in-law were both diagnosed with prostate cancer. Following excellent treatment they both made a full recovery and she feels this was as a result of early detection for her father and the excellent treatment for her father-in-law at Southmead Hospital where the BUI is based.

Barbora explains: “I am passionate about supporting the BUI and this November the Devilled Egg is going all out to raise as much money as we possibly can. The institute does such a fantastic job, they saved the life of my father-in-law and their research helps with early detection of the disease so I am more than happy to help raise some much needed funds.”

Trevor Reid, Head of Fundraising at the Bristol Urological Institute: “We are really pleased that Barbora is showing such fantastic support with a host of fundraising activities. The BUI has a worldwide reputation for its research into Prostate Cancer, catheter research and incontinence. The donations will improve the care we can give to our patients and help us carry out further vital research.”

The Bristol Urological Institute is based at Southmead Hospital and aims to improve the urological treatment and care of patients in Bristol and the South West. It provides a high standard of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as supporting and developing urological research, with a particular emphasis on urological cancers.

To make a donation or find out more about any of the activities listed please go to www.thedevilledegg.com.

Origami Crane

Here is an origami crane I made. I love origami and I am especially interested in the idea of Senbazuru. I was introduced to this by my friend Natsuki, who I met whilst living in Canada. Senbazuru is 1000 origami cranes held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. Senbazuru is a popular gift for family members and friends. I am planning to gradually build my collection of origami cranes and eventually fold 1000 to make a Senbazuru of my own!

Crafty!

As well as my illustration work I also make lots of little crafts. Here are some heart shaped door hangers, some of which I fill with lavender, and some with soft toy stuffing. There are also some photos of some bunting and hair clips that I made. Sometimes I take part in craft fairs - when I can find the time!

Sally Walker Catering

Here are some illustrations I did for Sally Walker Catering Ltd. The illustrations are being used on menus, business cards, letterheads and have even been transformed into an embroidered logo on the aprons!
